My woman wanted canning gear for a bit now..................

So after looking around a bit at canning supplies throughout our state & on the net.

The walmart in choctaw has fairly competative and affordable beginner canning gear.

Most of the women in my family can.

They had & still have dozens of the old style 30 to 40+qt American pressure cooker/canners with like 8 twist nuts to sinch the lid down. And every racks, tools & funnels ever needed for canning.

Well I found American cookers & gear. But I'm cheapasfuck and wasn't going to fork out $500+ for great beginner gear, but I got the basic idea.

figured we already have multiple stock pots from 12qt to 32qt for the waterbath veggie canning she does & we got two of the electric 6qt & 8qt pressure cookers (but my woman wanted the bigger stovetop pressure canner cause she wants to can more than a few qts of meat at a time).

So I ordered a presto 16qt pressure canner for $78 at walmart thursday (in store it's $90), it came in today.

So we go to pick it & canning gear this morn.

We got the canner, stack of racks, funnels, spices, jar grabber and several flats of mainstay pint & quart jars & lids, they have ball/mason jars for like $5/flat more.

So $232 for an decent beginner canning gear set up.

Told her on way back to house, I'm going to harvest a few of the deer that hang out daily in the front yard, I'll process most into steaks & roasts and she can can the bits/pieces & scrapes from deboning.

I try to can stuff every year. Usually tomatoes and some pickles and salsa. They ain’t prize winners but it works and no botulism so we’re good. I did grape jam two years ago and it was pretty good. I missed this year so looking forward to next year. It’ll give me another year to try to work my grape vine again

She's waterbath canned veggie's before.

she's been wanting to be all survivalist and pressure can lots of jars of meat, stews, fruits & veggies to fill the pantry.

Told her when my mom died and my sisters went through her house to gather belongings to divi amongst us sibs.

that the amount of home canned jars of meat and veggies, store bought canned & dry goods and traditional dried corn they pulled from the pantry, cellar & shed was enough to have fed 4 people for about 3 years.

And two 7' deep freezers full of pigs, beef & deer.

we're shawnee, so traditionaly the house is built on the woman's back, it's was my mom's house.
doesn't matter who you are, if you're allowed in no matter what time of day, a pot of coffee goes on the stove and food is cooked & served.

Even if you're not hungry, out of respect, you will drink coffee and eat a plate of food.

So I figure if my woman goes apeshit crazy canning regularly I might upgrade to a 30+qt pressure canner for her, dig a root cellar bunker & build a barn to store.

Told her she gets all survivalist canner food hoarder she'll convert from being a catholic borinqueños to mormon hahahaha.

Bought these at khol's black friday last night, best deal we were able to find for model of vac sealer & 5 roll pack for custom length bags. $60.89 OTD.

I was also too cheap for the expensive pressure canner. I have this 23qt one from amazon and it has been amazing for over a year. The only thing I did was get the adjustable pressure weight.

That's cool man.

Yes, I looked at a 23qt one that appeared simular to that one on temu for $78, but delivery time was couple weeks.

The 16qt was order/pay & next day there for pickup & since was buying other canning gear it worked out good for us this way.

Walmart online has the bigger pressure canners too for bit more funds,

but way I figure if her survivalist canning craze putters out in a few years then the 16qt canner don't take up as much space.

And if her canning prep esculates I will upgrade to the 30+qt American style.

So far she's done few qts of stew for testing, it was good.

told her she needs to do pint size jars since it's just us.

Figure the jars to fill the pantry, the vac sealer for meat in the freezer & dry goods in pantry.

A dehydrator and a vacuum jar sealer won't set you back much and furthers her capabilities . Couldn't say how many sealed jars of dehydrated cherry tomatoes I put up. The vacuum jar sealer is great. Hell, it'd work for ammo too. 🤣

I've had dehydrator(s) since the early 90s.

Kitchen aid Meat grinders for nearly as long, they're good for deer and beef jerky sticks and course ground meat, they're not fast, but good enough for grinding up 20lbs or so at a time.

got them cause I grew up using the old clamp to table crank meat grinders when we butchered hogs, beef and deer.

And we've got a vac jar sealer for several years now.

And she water bath canned, she wants to pressure can for longer shelf life, also can meat.

The vac bag sealer isn't bad, once figured out length to cut bags off bulk roll, seal end, fill then vac & seal bag.

The wife has a presto for the stove and a Carey electric. Both non cadillacs but she has no complaints. She put up pork with the Carey and it's quite tasty . A yt channel that I'd bet she'd enjoy is HT survival. Mostly food preserving but added goodies.

Yes, got the stovetop presto 16qt canner from walmart, it'll be for quart jars and double stack pints.

The 6qt electric pressure cookers are power xl & insta pot, she don't want to use the electrics, but I figure they'd be good for pint size jars.
Double stack 1/2 pints for jelly.

She's watched/suscribed to multiple yt survival posters & quite a few canner's canning deer, beef, pork & fowl.

Told her talk with my sisters, find out when they're canning & take your gear over and can with them,

I figure they already done for a bit since harvest few months gone.

If she cans ground venison, brown it in a skillet before she pressure cooks it. It will clump together if she doesn’t. A pint jar will hold a pound, a quart jar will hold two pounds. I can venison every year using an electric canner/ pressure cooker that will do four quarts or 5 pints. I have two of them for the days I want to put up more than normal.
I’ve canned venison chili, ground venison, venison chili, venison strew, and bsrbecur venison.
It comes out pretty good.
