“Close to Home” fishing?

For the most part yes all you need is a fishing license. Some lake parks will make you pay to enter the park. I haven’t been fishing in a long time.

iirc okc you have to have a city limit fishing permit to fish in the ponds, lakes & rivers.

I think all the places that sell fishing licenses in okc sell them

I believe OKC requires a fishing permit in addition to your state license. It’s been years since I fished around OKC so it may have changed.

ETA: OKC still requires a permit.

Looks like it’s only $20 for an annual permit. That ain’t to bad.

Some of them are pretty decent places. I used to go bounce a jig off the bottom or run a jerkbait in the winter here on on my lunch break.

Eagle Lake off Reno just down from Campus.

I grew up on kids lake before the city took it over. It used to be an awesome fishery. It’s still pretty good. Worms/minnows are good bait there. Small grubs or spinner will work well too. If you ever go, let me know and I’ll point you to a likely spot.

And you should definitely try sunset lake if you haven’t already. I’ve never fished it, but I’d be surprised if y’all couldn’t go catch a limit of stocked trout in short order. Fresh stocked trout are willing biters.

See people fishing Overholster & hefner and the east side of the zoo's lake about everytime I drive by them, also see them on the canadian from the east to the west side of city.

Used to help do a fishing clinic at Dolese Lake with special needs kids. That was a real trip, pun intended once again. 😵‍💫
They stock Dolese with trout the first of the year I be,ieve. It gets packed with orientals at times who aren’t shy about flipping a bobber into the place you just caught a fish.
I’d would definitely avoid crowded areas with your kid. Lines get tangled up, people will help themselves to your bait and gear if you’re not looking, etc.
You want him to have a pleasant time with successful fishing.

Been trying the last two days. They just stocked it yesterday.

The close to home fishing in Edmond’s bickham Rudkin park was ok, but after the big fish kill a year or two ago it’s pretty poor fishing.

I’ve heard eagle lake in del city and dolese park are both pretty good.

One of my favorite spots to catch bluegills is the close to home water in the wild horse park. It’s in mustang. Go south of the footbridge in the drainage ditch, cast around the weeds and stuff when it’s sunny out. I’ve caught some real chunky guys out of there, and it’s usually fast action too. Great for kids too.
