.308 vs .270 for deer hunting

Use 308win when I hunt in the short timber (most under 100yrd shots, sit fence line out to approx 300yrds, farther if I climb higher in tree).

when freezers full enough for a bit of eating, I'll carry some other caliber I got.

If hunt open country I'll use 7rm or 300wm.

If I stay in warm house drinking coffee & listening to stereo, since deer pass/hang around daily within 40yrds of front & back porches, sometimes will come right up to porches while we're on it, I use whatever pistol I pick up.

If on atv, tractor or vehicle, It's whichever "truck" gun I got that day.

I know both will kill deer I haven’t personally killed one with a .308 but have seen other people kill with it. I have always used 270,243,6.5 creedmoor, occasionally other calibers. I just didn’t know about things like killing power. Every deer I have ever shot with 243 or 270 either dropped or only went about 20 yards didn’t know about the 308

Berger VLD Hunter's or Elite Hunter's pushed at a decent speed placed high shoulder has been money since they've been in my rifles. I tend to push bullets a little harder so that could be a plus.

Biggest boddied buck I've ever killed was with a 168 FGMM high shoulder from about 130 and it folded like a shitty tent. That was out of an M1A too. I've had a couple of target bullets kill like that. Not 100% convinced its all bullet when you hit the right spot.

Prior to Bergers I loaded Hornady SST's 165 I think. Never lost one, but they didn't kill as fast as the Bergers did/do.

Probably the lack of bullet support for target bullets. 5 bullets in .27 Caliber from Berger and all hunting bullets

Vs a metric shit ton in .30 Cal

That's just from Berger. I didn't check the other major ones. I also wonder if the lack of support for factory target rifles in .27 Caliber play into it. I've never seen one? But really never looked.

I was looking to rebarrel my 270 with a different twist rate and deeper through. I started looking into the 270WSM and 6.8 western. I landed on the 6.8 western because I can shoot the heavier longer bullets. Just need to land on a rifle manufacture before I buy.

On opening day, October 1, I’m taking my crossbow because I’m not a law breaker like the rest of y’all. Fucking criminals!
Since getting busted up from head to toe in the 13' wreck, shooting one of my compounds more than a quiver or so I get a bit of pain in my broke "not repaired" wrists & neck/spine where nine fractured/broke (now "healed" says the doc) vertibre are.

So in 15' I bought a barnett crossbow, couple dozen bolts & broadheads to bow hunt with. Pretty sure I paid for all before I walked out the store's door, so afaik, I'm still not a criminal.

308 last year, 270 year before that, 30-30 year before that, and so on.
It is fun getting them all out and seeing what they do. Last year the results with the 308 were devastating.
My last 3 rifle seasons have been .308, 30-06 and 30-06. I might get another caliber setup and give it a try. I’d really like to get one with my Winchester 94 or Marlin 336.
