Kel-Tec Sub2000 5.7x28: Might be my favorite "every day" gun

Picked one up a few weeks ago. First mag or two had a few problems with 40gr ammo. Not a lot, but enough to notice. Gave it a thorough cleaning and it worked fine after that. I also got one of the new Kel-Tec PR57 pistols. It would absolutely not function with 40gr ammo. 27gr ammo worked perfectly and the quirky, clip-fed gun is actually pretty cool.

I called KT to see about sending in the PR57 and mentioned the issues I'd had with the Sub2000. I wound up getting shipping labels for both and sent them in. The PR57 is still there. I've had the Sub2000 back for a week. KT said they installed an upgraded bolt face and function-tested the gun with 40 rounds, 0 malfs.

The Sub2000 5.7 uses Gen2 FN magazines. They happen to be available for $19.99 at CDNN so I snagged 6 of 'em. I've since put another 150-ish rounds thru the gun and like it more and more. My wife also shoots it really well. She's been wanting a small, lightweight rifle she can pack in the car for her monthly trips to TX to visit the kids. She decided another Sub2000 5.7 was the ticket so I got my LGS to order one up...in OD green. The little rifle is only 16" long when folded and will fit in almost any medium-small travel bag. And being a Gen3 it'll fold up with a RDS on it.

Pretty nifty little gun. Now if only the PR57 works like it should when I get it back I'll be a happy 5.7 camper.

Had to buy the wife one after she shot mine. It was either that or give mine up. It's actually a good gun for her. Nice and light with little recoil. And she's been looking for a compact long gun to take on her monthly trips to TX to see the kids.

We set her up with a temp red dot until her new one gets here and spent some time function checking and zeroing:

That’s some snappy recoil!

Your love affair with those is starting to rub off on me. I really dislike the idea of leaving a gun in my truck, but as this world seems to be turning to shit faster than ever I’m starting to rethink my position. The slight weight and dimensions coupled with the firepower is intriguing. I’m fairly certain I could hide it in my tundra in such a way no one would find it unless knew it was there or they fully stripped the interior. So now im trying to decide if id rather be shot with a 10mm or a 5.7. But I think im gonna grab one of these.

Sweet............

I Need to check all the pcc's out in the local shops.

been wanting another since the 4095 rides on atv with my woman most of the time nowadays.

I'm thinking maybe another 40, but maybe a 45.

If affordable 762x39 ammo ever comes back I'll bulk up again and the folder ak's will be my truck/tractor/atv edc again.

The 10mm would be a kickass gun...but it weighs 20% more. When it folds up it fits in a pretty small bag. I having a pretty hard time finding a downside to them myself. But, I'm a true fanboi...

My Smith does this and is a fun little bugger to shoot. When fully loaded out with all 3 mags, it's heavy. I've been leaving my 1301 at home when I travel and brining this as it takes up less room.

Are you running FN factory ammo through or American Eagle? Not sure what other options are out there for this cartridge.

I'm a big fan of carbine/pistol travel kits that share mags and ammo. You don't have to carry two different rounds, meaning if one weapon fails, you don't loose half of your ammo load. I have the 2000 in .40.

This is my travel kit.

First of all, that case looks perfect for the KT. What model bag is that?

I have a variety of 5.7 ammo. FN, Federal AE, AAC, Fiocchi. The FN 40gr V-Max stuff (blue polymer tip) that's pretty inexpensive is loaded by Fiocchi...it's the same as the Fiocchi 40gr black tipped stuff. Both seem to have real consistency problems. The actual FN stuff is the best performer so far, especially the 27gr variety. But it's still prohibitively expensive. The AAC seems to work well but it's got some type of awful, black lube all over that makes it filthy dirty to handle.

Unfortunately this and others I have are old computer laptop bags. I accumulated them from my days in IT when they would issue me a new laptop every 3 years and let me keep the old one. Now laptops have gotten smaller so their carry bags are smaller. I have another that holds a Kris Vector and Glock 21 that can share mags. Some laptop workstations with 17" screens are still pretty large so there may be some aftermarket bags available on ebay that would be big enough for your need. Laptop bags are ideal as you can actually walk around with one over your shoulder in public if needed without raising any eyebrows, although some might wonder why you are still carrying around such a large laptop when much smaller options are out there, few would suspect what you actually are packing.
