Organic baby toys are moving around

The latest from our neighborhood Karen page. The neighborhood is flipping out. They don’t realize that we are in the center of farms and wilderness.

I used to bird hunt on a guy out west and north of Porter Hill, and he had a little granite knob out there that had a big ole crack & a ledge up toward the top of the knob. The knob was hollow and went down pretty deep. He shined a light down in there one time while we were hunting and the floor of that little cavern looked like the floor of that tomb in Raiders of the Lost Ark. No shit, freaked me right the fuk out. I still get the willies when I think about it.

TL/DR - Elgin is loaded with rattle snakes.

This dude was moving to our pond but my house was in the way. I scooped him in a bucket and dropped him off.

The bucket is a really good idea. They are very acrobatic and I almost lost a couple fingers one time when I picked a really big one up and he flipped around and made a go at my hand. If I wouldn't have lost my grip he might have got a pretty good grip. I did not pick him up again, but I did urge him on off the road so he didn't get squished.

Those things are bad news.

In case y’all didn’t know, some vets offer a rattlesnake vaccine for dogs, which also has a limited effect on other venomous snakes. My vet used it on her GSP and greatly reduced the damage done to her legs when she was bit by a water moccasin. Costs me $25/shot, with 2 shots needed a year. Cheap insurance for Clyde, we’ll be getting the Golden on the sauce soon too.

That dude is way cooler than our bigass red ear slider that has the pond to herself.
My grandpa paid a bounty for those. They can wreak havoc on fish.

One time I set a trot line in the pond and caught two great big catfish and a snake. At least I'm pretty sure it was a snake; there wasn't a whole lot left of him by the time the turtles got done. He was nicely gutted, though.

My brother's kids would be all over that thing. They love them some reptiles. At one point they had a large snapping turtle (or maybe a small alligator snapper, I forget which), a soft-shelled turtle, and a pretty good-sized red eared slider that they called Lady because it had long flowing moss that looked like hair growing from its shell.

I got them a couple of copies of the Oklahoma Amphibians & Reptiles book from the ODWC so they'd at least be safe in their animal handling.

The vaccine is a good idea if you live in a rural area or take your dog on country hikes. However, two of my dogs were bit by a diamondback. They were bit by the same snake, and it was several years ago before I knew about the vaccine. Both of the dogs were older and getting somewhat arthritic. After the nasty wounds healed, they both acted like young dogs again for years after the bite. I’m not advocating for snake bites, but the arthritis disappeared.

You know, now that you say that, I vaguely recall something about research involving rattlesnake venom as a treatment for arthritis.

Saw this guy just outside my shop today. Perfect timing since mice seemed to have invaded all of a sudden. I don't have any food in there at all but the little shits bring pecans in and picnic and crap all over the place. Hope he helps resolve the mouse problem.
