Savage 99 .22 hi power

I love those old 99s for some reason. Mine is a newer provenance, but there’s something evocative about those vintage rifles. If I were in your boots I’d have a hard time letting that get away.

The fact that you can buy brand new fresh ammo is pretty compelling. If the barrel cleans up you’re going to have a tough decision to make.

Beats me on cleaning without removing patina since appears to have some rust.

If it were mine I'd take the stock off, just damp wipe it down.

Then soak the rust with some hoppes, then after a bit brush with a wet nylon or brass bristle brush, bore clean regular way.

Spray internals with dry cleaner, brush & blowout with air. Then wipe all down with tetra or clp.

My 99 I bought cheap from a pawn shop back in the 90s, it had sat on the rack so long,

that when I ask the shop owner for a cash price, he looked in his log book, crunched numbers, then said $125 for rifle if you'll buy the ammo with it for $25.

So $150otd for the 99 and 2 3/4 boxes of federal ammo.

That’s why I haven’t done it yet I’m trying to figure out how to do it
It has enough honest wear that you’re not gonna violate a collectors piece. The absolute best penetrating oil is a 50/50 mix of Acetone and automatic transmission fluid. Kroil is second. I’d probably take the stocks off and just start dosing all the screws and joints so you don’t risk buggering up pins and screw heads. It’s not a rush job so you can be as meticulous as you want to be. You can probably put a pretty good cleaning with cotton rags and isopropyl alcohol.

I’m really curious what the bore looks like.

Wish I had a bore scope

I know a couple of people that have them. Amazon is a good place to find them too. Just don’t get to sucked in. I checking barrels out now before and after I clean.
I didn’t even realize Amazon sold them until a few years ago. A buddy of mine that was shooting for a well known rimfire outfit sent me some videos of prototype barrel bore they were messing with. I was blown away by the level of detail. He told me it was one of those rigid scopes that plugged into his phone. Amazing for the money.
