After I went to the gun smith I came back with more to think about. I was about ready to buy a 6.8 western. During are conversion about bullet selection. The 7 SAUM and the 7/6.5 PRC came up. The bullet selection was much better than the 6.8 western. I know that the 6.8 / 270 didn’t have a wide range of bullets. Now I’m looking into the 7SAUM as my next hunting and target round.

You can get good brass from ADG and Norma for the 7mm SAUM and enjoy a host of match/hunting bullets from numerous manufacturers. You’re more or less limited to 180grain bullet being a fieasible max weight. In my opinion you’ll never be able to take full advantage of the high BC the 190-195 grain bullets offer out of the 7mm SAUM/WSM. You may be able if you build it on a long action. Depending on powder, case capacity, and brass you may achieve 3,000fps give or take with 178-180 grain offerings. You would want a barrel with a twist of 1:8 to 1:8.5 to max stability.

Shooting a Berger 180gr Match Hybrid Target at 2950fps your transonic at +/-1775 yards

The 6.8/270 is a late comer to long range and the quantity of excellent LR bullets is not as deep as the 7/284
