M-14/M1A

Ok we have beat the crap out of mini 14s, but who here likes the grand daddy of that abomination? (Your mileage may vary 😁).
It was my pleasure to have one almost all the way through my days with Mother Green. Except for boot camp and my first billet in the 3 26th Amphib I always had one. I liked it so much I bought my own in 1978, a Springfield Armory made with almost all GI parts. That rifle had an H&R barrel that was absolute crap. As I grew I did a 6 month TAD with the 22nd AMU as an armorers assistant. I learned all sorts of things on how to accurize that system. Needless to say that knowledge followed me home and I have done lots of things to mine and it is 1 moa capable out to 600. It is on its 3rd barrel after the H&R crap box. I have noticed that accuracy of SA rifles is kind of hit and miss, kind of like issue rifles and M-80 ball is pretty crappy ammo. Most of them shoot ok with Special Ball, or Federal match. Most all of them benefit from a little down tension bedding and a unitized gas system. I have never seen a good mount to put a scope on one, but as an iron sight rifle I feel that there are non better... So who else here has a soft spot in their heart (or possibly head... like me) for the good old M-14?

My first "expensive" gun was a M1A Loaded. It's now a safe queen mostly, but I just love the thing. I always found it odd the hate it gets online, but if you take it to the range, everybody wants to see it. They're just cool, pretty, good shooting guns...and now I must shoot it this weekend.
I de-neutered mine so I could attach a Bayonet, and got a Turner Saddlery sling for it...and it's just perfect that way.

Almost bought an m1a several times but ended up buying some other firearm I also wanted.

Pop used to tell us bout way back when he had hand over his garand and get issued his m14 and a handfull of 20rnd clips, said later on he carried as many as he could.

Tell us it shoots bout like a garand, but 20 times instead of 8, if theres a bunch of them close, it got a switch you push, aim, then pull the trigger & hold on to that fucker.

I have had several garands since the 80s, they were all much much cheaper priced than m1a's.

Personally I detest the "short" M-14. I think the 18" Scout is about as short as I would go... but that is a personal thing. As for new rifles, I'm not sure I can recommend a Springfield Armory past 2015. I really recommend LRB rifles! They are the best made M1A as as of late, or older SA.

Back in the day I wanted an M21, but never had the scratch for one. These days I have more rifles than I have opportunities to shoot them.

I knew a guy who was working on an E3 clone back in the day. He had the fiberglass stock with the folding foregrip, but I don’t recall if he had the barreled action to go in it. He was also working on a design for a pistol grip fiberglass stock because he thought that was a more natural position than the original M14 stock.

I hate to say it, but the M-21 system was not a good system, but I DO love them! That is cool about the E-2. I had an original E-2 wood stock but foolishly let it go. Hadn't thought about that in a while! Had one of the original Leatherman 3X9 scopes for the M-21 system with ballistic cam for M118 ball.... And like the stock, it drifted away. Wish I had kept the 10X Unertal scope for the M-40 as well, but sometimes a guy need good whiskey. 😁

I've always liked the looks and cool factor of the M1A/M14. I've owned a few in various flavors. They're fun to shoot and I enjoyed them. I just never fell in love with them so I've sold every one I ever had.

I realized the M1A is one of those guns, like the AK, that I thought every "gun guy" should own. But I never learned to like the AK, either.

I had one of the E3 stocks...at least that's what I think it was. Is that the wood stock with the fish-belly butt and the fold-down front grip? That's what I had. And, yeah...big $$. I sold mine over 20 years ago for $500.
