S&W 5.7X28 pistol

My son got one of these and was very disappointed! First failure came at around 100 rounds then the firing pin broke. Smith took 4 months to send a new one. Had it out a while back and he was having a hell of a time sighting in his red dot. I decided to help him out, and found out that it could bearly keep 3 rounds on a 18x32" target at 25 yards. So I took it to my shop stripped to completely and started inspecting it part by part. Found that the crown on the barrel looked like a drunk monkey with a rat tail file had done it. Chucked it up and cut a nice 11° crown in it. It took almost 0.015 to clean it up. Just took it out and it now will shoot around 1 1/2" at 25 yards. It is a gas operated pistol with internal hammer, not striker fired. It has a fantastic trigger pull. Holds 22 rounds in the mag and is basically recoilless. Bottom line is that the crown in a pistol is just as important as in a rifle, and S&W should hang their heads in shame!

That's interesting. I've heard/read a lot of complaints about QC issues coming out of S&W over the past year or so.

I bought a BodyGuard 2.0 and the sights were way off. Lots of people complained about that. I just drifted the rear a bit and it seems to have cleared up the issue. There were also complaints of a pin at the rear of the gun either not installed correctly or working it's way out. Mine didn't have that issue. The BG 2.0 is really a nice gun and functions great. My wife commandeered the first one so I bought a second for me. Didn't have the sight or pin issue...but the trigger has just a little hitch in the take-up stage. It's annoying and I can't seem to get rid of it. First one wasn't like that.

I picked up one of the M&P .22 Mag pistols earlier this year. It's actually been really great so far.

The first gen 9mm M&PS also had lots of crown problems. I did at least 4 and then they would shoot well. I suspected the crown immediately but kind wanted to see how this thing was built. Cool design. Is the 22mag a internal hammer gun as well, not striker fired?
