This question came up in a class today, and my response "floored" this bunch of Federales. I told them if your starting subsonic you need a good 50 yard zero, if your super sonic you ought to have a 75-100 yard zero. Both of these "zeros" put you about 1 1/2" high at 25..... OMG!! Their method was right in the middle of the dot at 7 yards. Guess they had been watching WAY TOO MUCH zero your AR at fill in the blank rediculous close range videos. Backed em up to 50 and not one red dot was even close on a C zone steel.....so, at what distance do you guys zero?

And that I fully understand, but if you put a target at 50 yards and fire 5 rounds if the middle of the group is about in the middle.... No matter if it is 2-10" you have a 50 yard zero. I'm lucky to hold a 4" group unsupported, but if pressed I can hit a 10"X10" steel plate most times let's say 8 out of 10.

I was always trained at 25m and still do. You can still shoot 50m (like Patton) and hit a couple inches low and shoot 100 and aim at head/neck. But that is military (namely Army), not other agencies or police or whomever. I noticed that so many places have so many difference techniques or standards. Even across the military there will be differences but they're all similar; civilians, LE, and feds are all over the place.

Done the cleet phase4 25yrd course (standing, kneeling, primary & off hand, barrier, 3yrd hip shot) for security 20+ years back and the now required yearly requalification course.

There was approx 35 or so in course I went through, iirc 8 were kicked off course for unsafe acts 1st round, few others throughout the day and some didn't shoot well enough in any of the 5 rounds for the required 70 in any rounds to pass.

Back in the day we got yearly red cards (cards now are white, have initial licensing date issued to present), cleet's closet sized hq was in the basement of ohp's hq on eastern, the entrance was at the south end of building (no sidewalk) down concrete steps through steel door into narrow dark hallway with one really dim 15watt lightbulb in middle of hall, they had a split door, if top half open, then cleet was open, two ladies there to run it with the staff attorney hahahahahahahaha.

I have also shot a tad with few le's on 50 & 100yrd courses, some shot excellent, some great, some squeeked by with the required 70 passing score, and some went through the course multiple times before getting the 70, one dept had a tact/react team that required 95 on 100yrd course to stay on team.

Yeah, but at what distance do you zero your pistol if you have an optic? Or drift your sights?

Just plain jane open sights on my pistols.

Initial sight in at 25.

Did have to file down front sight on a 1911 that shot center but over a foot low even off a bag. Could of drove to city and found & bought a lower front sight, but I had files in tool box.

Had drift center rear sight on ruger p90, they were new on market, southwest shooters had just got them in, I bought one, couldn't hit shit with it, wasted a box ammo, took it to my bro, he shot it, same thing, he lossened allen screw, moved sight, tightened, shot it and hit everytime, hand it back, told me I owed him a coke for sighting my gun in.

I’m solidifying my dislike for red dot sights on a handgun. The way they ride the slide on a pistol it takes my concentration off what I’m shooting and puts it on trying to follow the dot. Probably a me problem. I can hit consistently to 200 with my RIA 10mm and clay pigeons all day at fifty with my first gen Vaquero in .45 Colt. I could likely stretch that out but fifty is the near berm down south. The rest of my remuda is consistent but I wouldn’t push them much past 75. I acknowledge that their shortcomings are all on me and not the weapons. They just need more lovin time.
